Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) aka Soldier’s woundwort, staunchweed or nosebleed.
Grab a handful of flowers & leaves (chew it up a little to make it softer or use 2 rocks to crush well) and pack it into a bleeding wound, or in a bleeding nose to reduce bleeding and inflammation.
It used to be dried, ground finely and snuffed to stop a nosebleed, it was so effective.
Yarrow is antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, so an ointment of the leaves & flowers is helpful for wounds, especially helpful for ulcers, fistulas, swelling etc. also healing for dermatitis and chronic skin disorders.
Yarrow is one of the best herbs for helping the body deal with fevers, so is helpful for colds, flu, headache, pneumonia, inflamed throat & fever.
Yarrow can also be used to stop internal gastrointestinal bleeding, heavy menstruation or bleeding gums.
Yarrow is highly recommended for women of all ages, being so beneficial to the reproductive organs of women, and it is said that many troubles could be avoided if yarrow tea was taken from time to time!
To stop hair falling, bathe the head with a yarrow infusion.
Yarrow is also a bitter herb, so it stimulates the digestive system and can be used for digestive troubles, such as bloating, gas, constipation & also diarrhea, haemorrhoids, plus great for gut healing.
In the garden, Yarrow is a compost
activator; add a few leaves to the compost every so often to get things going quickly. It has high levels of sulfur, potassium, copper, phosphates, nitrates, and potash.
Beneficial insects love Yarrow, including
predatory wasps & lady bugs. Yarrow is definitely a must-have herb for the maara (garden).
