Wormwood (artemisia absinthium) has been used for centuries, mentioned in the Bible and used in ancient Egypt & Greece for medicinal purposes, as well as a natural repellent for insects like moths and fleas.
Wormwood's primary use (linked to its name) was to help expel intestinal
worms and parasites like roundworms, pinworms, and tapeworms.
It was traditionally used for digestion, where it can promote appetite and bile secretion, which can be helpful for anorexia and dyspepsia, with insufficient gastric flow.
It can also aid indigestion, bloating, gastritis, IBS, Crohn's and minor liver and gallbladder problems.
Wormwood has been shown to exhibit activity against certain bacteria and fungi, including Candida species.
And ongoing research is exploring the potential of artemisinin and other wormwood extracts in treating various cancer cell lines.
Wormwood contains compounds like artemisinin that have potent anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. It is used in traditional remedies and topical ointments to ease pain and swelling associated with conditions like rheumatic pains, osteoarthritis, muscle aches, and menstrual cramps.
Also used for common colds and influenza.
Growing Wormwood: Wormwood likes full sun or partial shade - it is very happy under one plum tree! It is drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained soil, including dry, sandy, or rocky conditions.
Prune the bush back in autumn to maintain the shape of the herb.
To repel pests: Plant with beans, carrots, onions, and leeks to deter pests like aphids and carrot fleas.
But best not to plant too close to tomatoes or brassica.
For chickens: Wormwood can be planted around chicken coops to deter pests, and chickens may self-medicate by pecking it to help rid themselves of internal parasites. Or pick a branch and place it in the coop to help deter mites.
Cautions: Medicinal use of wormwood should always be approached with care and ideally under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using wormwood. Use in caution with gastric and peptic ulcers and seizure disorders.
