Headaches - Long associated with the head, it
help relieve headaches, particularly if they are caused by tension. It
is a wonderful addition to any sleep formula and helps support healthy
sleep, especially if wakefulness is caused by those “churning thoughts
that just wont stop.”
Think of Wood Betony as an all-around remedy for headache, especially if it's caused by a nervous or digestive origin.
Digestion - As a tonic it has long been associated with the solar plexus region of
the body and is an excellent digestive tonic. It improves circulation
and harmonizes the functions of the digestive system.
In combination
with its calming effects, it is excellent for digestive distress caused
by nervous tension, anxiety, and depression. It can stimulate weak
digestion while its also soothes and calms. So it can be great
for easing the symptoms of inflammatory digestive conditions.
It is
slightly warming and gently invigorates the system. It stimulates the
appetite and supports those that are emaciated and depleted. Helpful for relieving tension and gas, heartburn
Memory & Concentration - Wood Betony improves memory and concentration, much like Gingko, but
more effective. In combination with its calming effect, it is excellent
for exams and other stressful situations that require focus (think of Rosemary for this also).
It is
invigorating (without stimulating), toning, and nervine properties
combine to make it a wonderful herb for the elderly and those recovering
from long illness.
Wounds - Externally, it has similar wound healing properties
as yarrow (perfect for nosebleeds) and is excellent as a wash for burns. Additionally, you can make a poultice out of this herb to heal wounds, bruises, swellings, sore muscles, varicose veins, and tumours.
Kidney Function - Wood betony can be helpful for urinary, bladder and kidney pain. It has a diuretic action,
which helps to increase urinary rate. This may help to remove toxins
from the urinary system, in turn enhancing kidney function. Diuretic
action of wood betony may also help to urinary tract infections (UTI).
Respiratory Problems - Wood betony help to relieve asthma and
respiratory infections like pneumonia and bronchitis. The expectorant
properties of wood betony may help to soften the buildup of thick
mucus. This will assist in helping drainage of mucus, and
easing sinus congestion.
Emotionally and spiritually - Wood Betony helps to root and ground and is
perfect for those who are “spacey” and not connected to their body and
the earth.
It's a wonderful remedy for bringing one back into their body and becoming reacquainted
with the older instinctual knowing residing in the solar plexus, or
‘gut’.
Wood Betony also appears to have the curious effect of increasing dream recall; the dreams are more lucid and often include the appearance
of a benevolent being or ally. William Salmon, writing in early 16th century England, describes one of Wood Betony’s actions as “incarnative “.
Tonic - It's good to remember that Wood Betony is not a herb that fixes things quickly, it is not a 'remedy' like many of our other herbs. Wood Betony is a tonic, which means it helps the body to fix itself, slowly, and return to balance.
It's been noted by herbalists that people's eyes get
brighter when they use Wood Betony for a time. It has an
uplifting effect on the mind and the spirits; it is certainly a true
brain tonic and it is of unquestionable value in the ageing brain as a
protector against decline of the mental powers.
