The mighty Tōtara (podocarpus totara) is considered a chiefly tree, rakau rangatira, can live for over 1000 years, and has been traditionally used for many purposes.
It's timber was highly prized, being resistant to rot, it was the preferred wood for canoes, sterns, water vessels, carving, whares, musical instruments and tools.
Medicinally, it is highly antibacterial, helpful for bacterial infections, including staph and acne, plus parasites.
Combined with Manuka, it can be helpful for treating and reducing fevers.
Externally, it can help skin conditions like acne, as well as venereal disease and haemorrhoids.
It has traditionally also been used to ease stomach troubles, plus asthma, coughs and to treat kidneys.
Tōtara is also showing to be an effective treatment for dental plaque.
Not recommended while hapu and take away from meals.
