Skullcap (scutellaria lateriflora) is a delicate little plant, with beautiful little purple flowers. Sometimes referred to as American Skullcap, rather than Chinese Skullcap (Baikal Skullcap).

Skullcap was well known among First Nations American tribes, as a strong female medicinal herb. It was used in some tribes as a ceremonial plant to introduce young girls into womanhood.

Skullcap has been used as a nervine tonic, for stress, anxiety, depression, irritability, premenstrual tension -  PMS, menstrual cramps, epilepsy, insomnia, nervous fatigue, tension headache, and nerve pain.

It can be used for long-term tension and exhaustion, relaxing as well as reviving the nervous system.

It has shown to enhance the mood without reducing energy or function.

Skullcap has shown to be helpful in treating neurodegenerative disorders such as depression, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

It has been used as an anticonvulsant in muscular tension, twitching and tremors, seizures and nerve pain.

For insomnia and sleep disorders, it combines well with Valerian.

Skullcap has been used very successfully to ease the symptoms of drug and alcohol withdrawal. It soothes the physical symptoms of withdrawal like muscle aches, twitches, digestive upset, agitation, and poor sleep.

Growing conditions - Skullcap likes to grow in rich, moist soil in partial shade or full sun with plenty of compost and regular mulch added before/after planting.

Our herbs are organically grown and come in a recycled or compostable pot.
