Sage (salvia officinalis) is one of the herbalist's most valuable herbs and is an essential herb to have growing in the herb garden, close at hand.
It has been grown and used for centuries, for religious ceremonies, as well as in food and for medicine. The word salvere means "to heal/be well", it is such a valuable herb.
Sage is a powerful antibacterial & anti-inflammatory herb, a natural antibiotic, high in antioxidants and nutrients, which can strengthen the body's immune system.
It has been used to support brain function, depression & memory (another great herb alongside Rosemary for study), aid in oral health, hormones through menopause, treat lung infections, fevers, sore throats, colds & chills, digestion, ulcers and gut, hair health and bleeding wounds.

Brain Function - Sage has been well documented for improving memory, cognitive function and reducing irritability and anxiety (especially in relation to hormone changes). Studies are showing promising results for Alzheimers patients also.
Sage can also be helpful for fatigue, tension headaches and fever.
Oral Health - Use Sage as a gargle or tea for mouth ulcers, inflammation of tooth pulp, receding gums, oral infections and sore throats. It shows to be effective in killing plaque and one study showed it also killed strep & staph bacteria.
Menopause - Sage has been used to effectively balance and ease hot flushes and night sweats (alongside lavender) associated with menopause.
Lungs - With it's anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties, sage can help break up and expel mucus from the lungs, making it easier for the body to clear lungs of phlegm.
Digestion - Sage can be very helpful for indigestion, gas, diarrhoea, increases appetite and relaxes the muscles of the intestine.
Externally - Sage is one of the best styptics for wounds, where it stops bleeding and promotes healing of wounds, sores and ulcers.
It can also be helpful for pain after surgery, inflamed and painful joints. Sage is also a wonderful hair tonic, stimulating hair growth and easing dandruff.
Rubbing sage leaves on your skin can help repel biting insects also!
Emotionally/Spiritually- Sage has long been used to connect to the spiritual realm or enhance intuition, to look inwards and reflect. It is said to be a very beneficial influence on the human spirit, to lift spirits, cleanse and bring wisdom and deep clarity. It can aid us in setting intentions for ourselves and our Earth.
One old herb book says of Sage: "During the Virgin Mary's flight from Herod, all flowers in the field were asked to hide her and baby Jesus, but none gave her shelter except Sage. After Herod's men had gone without seeing her and danger had passed, the Virgin Mary told the Sage: "From now to eternity, you will be the favourite flower of mankind. I give you the power to heal man of all illness and save him from death as you have done for me".
