Rue (Ruta graveolens) is commonly known as garden rue or Herb-of-Grace, historically used for it's medicinal qualities and and as an insect repellent.

The Catholic Church dipped branches of rue into Holy water and sprinkling it over the heads of parishioners as a blessing.

Rue can fight against fungal infections such as dermatitis and athletes’ foot. Depending on the severity of the infection, rue oil can be used directly on the skin, especially when one is suffering from athletes’ foot. It also provides instant relief from itchy skin.

Pests like mosquitoes, cockroaches and flies avoid Rue. It has been used in incense sticks and burners in order to ward off insects.

Rue contains alkaloids, which have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anti-fertility and antihistamine properties. Rue also contains a plant compound called rutin, which is an antioxidant that helps prevent free radical damage.

Traditionally Rue was used to stimulate menstrual flow, soothe eye problems, help gastrointestinal complaints, and treat disorders of the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis and Bell’s palsy, dizziness and vertigo.

Chewing rue leaves was used to help eliminate bacteria on the gums and fresh leaves placed on the forehead were said to cure headaches (Grieve).

Newer studies show Rue has a protective effect against DNA strand breakage and mutagenesis, as well as brain cancer cells.

While Rue was used medicinally in times past, and is generally considered safe if consumed in small amounts to flavour food (definitely not when hapu), it shouldn't be ingested in larger amounts, unless under expert advice.

But when used topically as an oil or balm, it can safely be used to cure a myriad of ailments such as fungal infections, dermatitis, itchy skin, and sciatica pain.

Rue is also a lovely looking, delicate herb in the garden, very hardy, and will thrive in drier conditions where others won't survive.

Organically grown herb in a recycled or compostable pot.
