Parcel (Apium graveolens) is one of the oldest vegetables in recorded history.
It is a delicious and very easy herb to have in your garden. It is also called Wild Celery or Cutting Celery, because you can cut stalks and the plant will keep on growing easily.
Plus you can use the leaves to get the same taste of celery in your salads, soups, dips and broths. And the seeds can be particularly helpful medicinally.
It tastes similar to a cross between parsley and celery. And because it's perennial, it's a really easy way to have celery growing in your garden year round.
Celery is usually heavily sprayed in NZ commercially, and it can be a tricky vegetable to grow at times.
Medicinally, Wild Celery is a powerhouse of healing! It can be beneficial for rheumatism, arthritis (especially when connected with depression), sciatica, gout, and strengthening the nerves associated with nerve pain.
It can also aid liver and kidney complaints,
relieves indigestion and spleen diseases, stimulates appetite, and can be especially good for children.
It can help lower blood pressure, improve eyesight, cleanse blood, help eczema, sores, wounds and inflamed gums.
Parcel can stimulate the uterus and is anti-inflammatory. It is said to be very calming in cases of hysteria, promoting restfulness and sleep. An essential oil obtained from the plant has a calming effect on the central nervous system.
The seed is rich in natural sodium and is a helpful antacid tonic. The crushed seed can be used to make celery salt, as well as a brew for external wounds and as a mouth wash for gums.
The root is harvested in the autumn and can be used fresh or dried. The
whole plant can be harvested when fruiting and can be juiced or dried. The seeds are harvested as they ripen and are dried
for later use.
It likes to grow in a sunny spot, with a good mix of compost and mulch to keep the soil moist. It will reach well over a metre high as it flowers and the bees love it!
Organically grown herb in a recycled or compostable pot.
