Mamaku is a very sacred rongoā and is to be treated with the utmost respect.

She is a gentle, soothing, nurturing rākau whose role within the ngahere (forest) is to soothe Papatūānuku after she has been torn apart by land slips.

As a rongoā, Mamaku does the same for us, soothing our skin when it is affected by sunburn, insect bites, blisters, eczema, psoriasis, abscess or boil, rheumatism or an outbreak of shingles.

Mamaku is incredibly hydrating to the skin and can help cell renewal and build collagen production, soothing and moisturising, aiding in keeping skin youthful & healthy.

Mamaku can help with signs of aging like sun spots, as well as fine lines and wrinkles, so skin appears more radiant, plump and smooth.

Mamaku has been used very successfully to treat wounds such as long standing diabetic ulcers or surgical wounds that will not heal.

Mamaku Oil would be perfect in an oil serum, moisturiser or healing balm

Sustainable Mamaku Harvesting

We only ever harvest Mamaku from healthy plants, with at least 2 strong fronds and only ever take what is needed. We say a Karakia (prayer) on entering the grove and give thanks after harvesting, following Tikanga Rongoā protocol.

The swirling, unfolding koru fronds of the Mamaku are a symbol of new life and new beginnings mirroring the plant’s capacity to regenerate and renew life. In its natural environment ferns such as Mamaku play a key role in regenerating and replenishing the native bush, returning essential nutrients to the soil, thus laying a foundation for new growth. The umbrella like canopy is one of nature’s ways of protecting the emerging new growth below, thus retaining precious moisture.
