Stinging Nettle (urtica dioica) has been a staple in herbal medicine since ancient times. Ancient Egyptians used stinging nettle to treat arthritis and lower back pain, while Roman troops rubbed it on themselves to help stay warm.

It has been used for hundreds of years to treat hayfever & allergies, painful muscles and joints, eczema, arthritis, gout, and anemia.

Nettle is so good at treating pain and sore muscles, especially related to arthritis, that the Arthritis Foundation suggests that nettle tea may also reduce the inflammation and pain association with osteoarthritis.

Nettle is incredibly nutritious for both other plants and humans:

  • Vitamins: Vitamins A, C and K, as well as several B vitamins
  • Minerals: Calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium
  • Fats: Linoleic acid, linolenic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid
  • Amino acids: All of the essential amino acids
  • Polyphenols: Kaempferol, quercetin, caffeic acid, coumarins and other flavonoids
  • Pigments: Beta-carotene, lutein, luteoxanthin and other carotenoids

As well as being delicious, nettle tea is reputed to help combat several ailments, including eczema & acne, asthma, hay fever (runny and itchy nose, congestion, sneezing) and muscle aches. Just steep a few fresh tips in boiling water, removing them when the water goes slightly green, to avoid bitterness.

Nettle is also used for gastrointestinal or uterine bleeding. It can increase urine output and remove uric acid, while replenishing nutrients; very helpful in treating edema, arthritis and heart disease.

Tinctures are a liquid extract made by steeping fresh organic herbs in alcohol. Tinctures are the most concentrated form of herbal medicine and if taking internally (consult a herbalist) are best taken under the tongue where they directly enter the blood stream. They are very strong and may be taken diluted in water, juice or tea.

Contraindications: Use caution with a history of bleeding disorder, and if using in conjunction with barbiturates.

Ingredients: organically grown nettle, steeped in Kerikeri-made pure alcohol & vegetable glycerin.
