Meadowsweet (filipendula ulmaria) has been used medicinally for centuries, it was one of the three most sacred herbs of the Druids. The flowers were historically used to flavor mead.
It's a lovely perennial herb, with delicate sweet flowers, usually found in damp meadows.
It was called the 'Bubblegum plant' by children, because of the after taste of the leaves when gently chewed. (my 7 yr old agrees but my 14 yr old doesn't)
It is specifically used for the stomach and digestion, in particular, peptic ulcers, both as a tonic and a treatment.
It helps regulate stomach acid levels, so is healing for hyperacidity, heartburn, and gastritis.
It soothes and protects the mucous membranes of the gut, so great for IBS and any GIT inflammation. It is astringent, so also helpful for diarrhoea.
Meadowsweet contains the constituents to make aspirin, and will protect the lining of the gut while reducing pain and inflammation in the body.
Because of the salicylates present in Meadowsweet, it can be helpful for thinning the blood and high blood pressure.
Meadowsweet has anti-inflammatory properties, so is very helpful for inflammatory conditions like arthritis, gout (promoting uric acid excretion) and all muscle and joint pain.
It is antibacterial and immune modulating, helpful for all fevers, common cold, bronchitis, blood disorders, and urinary tract.
Studies with Meadowsweet show strong properties in reducing blood glucose levels in diabetes also.
Topically, Meadowsweet can be soothing for skin problems such as acne, breakouts, redness and puffy faces.
