Lovage (levisticum officinale) was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and later became popular in medieval gardens.
It is in the same family as celery/parsley/carrots and has celery-like taste, great for soups, stews and stocks or pork and poultry dishes.
It is edible and a good alternative to celery in cooking. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, and various B vitamins, as well as minerals like potassium and calcium. It also contains quercetin, a flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
It has a warming nature which improves poor circulation.
Lovage is probably best known for its soothing properties on the digestive track - simply make a tea with the leaves and/or seeds to relieve upsets, bloating and gas. It is soothing for the digestive tract - helping to ease inflammation associated with colitis.
It can help with lung issues, to loosen phlegm in the lungs, which in turn improves airflow, breathing, and oxygen intake.
Lovage is still the principal ingredient in many diuretic tea mixtures. It's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties can also help the urinary tract - preventing & treating kidney stones and urinary tract infections.
It can also aid painful joints such as arthritis and gout.
Lovage can be beneficial in regulating menstruation symptoms, including cramps and bloating also.
Lovage is considered to be a soothing herb for skin irritations such as dermatitis, acne, psoriais and rashes, cleansing within and without.
It can be really lovely to soak in a bath or foot soak with Lovage after a big, tiring day - it is refreshing and soothing. Pick fresh leaves, bruising them and put them straight into the bath water.
Harvest the seed when dried by cutting off and drying whole flower heads. The stems can be cut and used anytime, the flavour is best just after flowering. Or store the root, after digging and washing, in a dry place until needed.
Lovage likes well composted and mulched soil, and grows well in either a sunny or partially shady position.
