Land Cress (Barbarea vulgaris) is wonderful herb and companion plant to have in the maara (garden).

It is highly nutritious, with twice the amount of vitamin A as broccoli, and three times the vitamin C found in oranges. It also contains vitamins B and E, iron and calcium.

Leaves were used as a source of nutrients and were traditionally used to help heal wounds.

The seeds have been used to treat asthma, indigestion, constipation, sore throats, coughs and headaches.

It is very low in carbs and is a a mild diuretic, removing excess fluid from the body.

Land cress tastes peppery like watercress and is a great substitute for watercress.

They are delicious eaten raw in salads. It's also great in sandwiches, cooked like spinach, or used in soup, pasta sauce, pesto, curries, stews and omelettes.

The yellow flowers are edible too, and the seeds can be sprouted and added to a salad also.

Land Cress is a wonderful companion plant, especially for other brassica, to help control the annoying white butterfly.
Land Cress puts out substances from their leaves known as glucosinolates which stimulate white butterflies to lay their eggs on them. They also contain natural soap-like substances called saponins which kill the baby caterpillars when they hatch and eat the leaves!

It’s a herb that is very hardy, thriving in partial shade or sun. It grows quickly, then self-seeds for next year's supply!

Organically grown herb in a recycled or compostable pot.
