Hyssop (hyssopus officinalis) is another ancient herb, used in Medieval and Renaissance time. Hyssop was used to cleanse sacred areas and is also referenced in the Bible a number of times.
It's main use is for the chest and lungs - especially great for coughs, to loosen the phlegm, making it easier to cough up. It also relieves the asthmatic cough and reduces inflammation and spasms that come with lung infections.
Also great for clearing the stuffy head that can come with head colds.
Hyssop is anti-spasmodic with tonic properties, so is helpful for the liver and gallbladder, as well as digestive health - to ease pain, gas, spasms and ulcers.
It can increase the production of digestive enzymes, stomach acid and bile and can boost nutrition absorption.
Hyssop combines well with other herbs as a parasite cleanse also.
Topically, Hyssop can be helpful as a fungal treatment and to speed the healing of bruises.
It also shows strong antiviral properties, especially helpful for treating herpes 1 & 2.
And tests have shown that Hyssop can lower blood sugar levels as well as prevent destruction of red blood cells.
Spiritually/Emotionally - Hyssop has been used to cleanse and purify, as referenced in the Bible - "Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean".
Hyssop can aid mental clarity, boost creativity and assist peaceful meditation, and in the words of Valerie Worwood... "helping to awaken closed hearts and minds, bringing tolerance and understanding, unconditional love and acceptance".
It has been used for culinary purposes and to flavour liqueur.
Hyssop is another wonderful herb to have in your maara (garden)!
