Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa) is a humble herb, often missed amongst other plants, but it has been used for centuries, mostly well known in treating scrofula, a form of tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes.
When lymph nodes become congested or swollen, or where they are hard
and painful to the touch, Figwort can help clear the nodes.
Swollen lymph nodes can be a sign of infection or it may just be
stagnant drainage that needs a little support.
Figwort is an overall cleansing herb that stimulates detoxing of the body, so it has been a useful herb to include in congestive skin troubles, such as acne, psoriasis, eczema & mastitis.
It stimulates the liver and strengthens kidneys and bladder, and encourages the uptake of nutrition by the cells.
Externally as a wash or balm, it can be used for wounds, sprains, ulcers, haemorrhoids, burns, inflammations etc.
The flowers attract beneficial insects in the garden also.
Growing conditions - Figwort is a hardy herb, preferring partial shade and a moist or well mulched soil.
Organically grown herb, in a compostable or recycled pot.
