Stunning Echinacea (echinacea purpurea) has been widely used medicinally for centuries by the first nations people of America, dating back to the 18th century.

Traditionally it was used to treat a variety of ailments, including coughs, colds, inflammation, rabies, snakebite, sore throats, toothache, worms, and as a painkiller. In addition it was used to treat animals, especially horses. (Springer, 2016)

Echinacea can be incredibly useful in boosting the immune system to prevent infections, as well as treating acute infections: viral, bacterial or parasitic.

A number of studies have concluded that echinacea can cut the chances of catching a cold by more than half and can shorten the duration of a cold.

Echinacea can be helpful for so many conditions:

  • swollen lymph glands
  • upper and lower respiratory conditions such as sore throat, flu, cold, sinus, cough, fever, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, whooping cough
  • conjunctivitis
  • allergies
  • abscesses, ulcers, dermatitis, psoriasis, cellulitis, herpes, shingles
  • candida, ulcers, dysentery
  • urinary tract infections, kidneys and bladder

Traditionally, Echinacea has also been used topically as a wound healer, to help with tissue regeneration and prevent infection.

It has anti-inflammatory properties, and has shown to aid in reducing anxiety, lowering blood sugar levels, protection against cancer and skin conditions.

Spiritually/emotionally: Echinacea can be supportive with strength and stamina, when we feel fractured physically or emotionally, especially during times of transition, restoring our connection to wholeness. It helps to restore healthy boundaries. Echinacea can be a herb guardian angel, helping support us emotionally and physically. Growing echinacea around the home is said to bring abundance to the kainga.
