The Garlic Chives herb (Allium tuberosum) has a varied and rich history over centuries, having been cultivated since the Middle Ages. This herb was also known to have health benefits in ancient Chinese medical texts written during the Ming Dynasty.
We all likely remember using it in food, with its mild garlic flavour, but it's also packed with nutritional benefits and is very helpful medicinally!
It is high in in Vitamin C, A, B2, K, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, potassium, and beta carotene.
Traditional medicinal uses of these chives include treating urinary incontinence, kidney and bladder weaknesses, balance blood pressure, boost digestion, treat intestinal
parasites, boosting immune systems, promoting good digestion and to treat anemia.
It can also be used to treat colds, coughs, sore throats and ulcers.

Traditional Chinese medicine used garlic chives for many purposes including as a general tonic, increasing energy, hemorrhages, treating liver, kidneys and digestive tract, and also as an antidote for some poisons.
Used externally, garlic chives' small bulbs can be rubbed on bug bites, burns, minor cuts and wounds to stop bleeding and help to heal.
The young shoots of garlic chives make a great garnish for salads and dishes. You can also use the leaves as a substitute for scallions. The flowers are edible also. You can add the entire plant to soups, stews, salads, and sandwiches, although they are best in their raw state as much as possible, as too much heat can destroy some of their benefits & nutrients.
We love adding them to herb pesto and on soft buttery potatoes or kumara.
They grow well in full sun and moist, well drained soil. Beetroot, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, potatoes, rhubarb, kohlrabi, parsley, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, mustard and capsicums like garlic chives beside them.
Garlic chives discourage slugs, aphids
and brassica caterpillars and are the only plants not touched when the tropical army worm eats it way through most other things.
Organically grown herb in a recycled or compostable pot.
