Akeake (Dodonaea viscosa) is a hardy bush often found around coastal areas.

The wood is very durable and hard, so was traditionally used for weapons, axe handles and spades. "āke, ake, ake" in Te Reo Māori  means ‘Forever and ever’, referencing the strength of this rakau.

Medicinally, Akeake is used to treat:

  • painful swollen joints
  • arthritis & gout
  • croup, pneumonia, cough, tuberculosis
  • fevers
  • gut cramps and spasms
  • stomach imbalance, diarrhoea, IBS
  • sore throats and colds
  • diabetes
  • headaches
  • tooth pain and infections
  • cuts, wounds, rashes, eczema, burns
  • candida
  • enhances immune system response
  • antimicrobial including strep and staph.

Akeake is rich in tannins, so is a great option to stop bleeding - simply crush and apply the juice of the leaves to a bleeding wound. This was traditionally also used to treat stonefish and stingray stings.

A poultice made from the leaves was traditionally applied to boils, sores or ulcers.Australian First Nations people chew the leaves for toothache, or apply the boiled root juice. The Massai of Africa use the teased-out twig as a toothbrush.

Think of Akeake for lung infections as part of a lower chest tonic, rheumatic pain (this could replace Cat's Claw in traditional herbal medicine), and I also like working with Akeake to help deal with a strep and candida imbalance, especially in the gut.

Tinctures are a liquid extract made by steeping fresh organic herbs in alcohol. Tinctures are the most concentrated form of herbal medicine and if taking internally (consult a herbalist) are best taken under the tongue where they directly enter the blood stream. They are very strong and may be taken diluted in water, juice or tea.
